Cylinder 7 Misfire, only on Start (well, mostly)
2006 4.7L V8 SLT
Having a few issues as of late with my wife's durango, a fix for a couple have alluded me.
Used to get a misfire on cylinder 5 often, but after 2 plug and coil changes, it cleared up finally. Now getting misfire code on cylinder 7. I had already changed the plug and coil for that one, and it went away for a little bit, but cropped up again. Replaced both again yesterday and cleared the CEL. One driving trip about 10 miles and it stayed off. Next trip it came on again shortly after starting and pulling out of the driveway.
We get a puff of greyish/white smoke on starting almost every time. My wife says it also smokes when idling for awhile, though honestly I have never seen it do that.
Other, maybe helpful info:
No coolant loss
No overheating
We do park on an incline with the front of the car facing down most of the time.
Oil consumption (about a quart every couple of months) *Recently discovered that I probably need to replace the valve cover gasket on the driver side - for some reason the bottom front 2 bolts on the gasket were all the way loose and I believe that is where the majority of the oil leak was coming from. Tightened them down for now, yesterday.
Get a CEL occasionally for the O2 sensor, which I have replaced once already, however, this is for the pre-cat sensor on the opposite(passenger) side as this cylinder.
No misfire except on start (in as far as I have seen). Doesn't happen every time on start, but maybe about 50% of the time. The amount of the puff of smoke on start seems to vary, but usually the more there is, the more likely the misfire code fires.
Very very slight rock on idle (probably not even enough to mention)
I have a sneaking suspicion I have at least one clogged (or cloggging) cat that I will test soon.
Here is a pic of the plug when I took it out. For the most part, it looks OK, maybe a little hot but there is oil, but only on the threads. The coil was quite clean. Plan on checking some of the other plugs today just to see what they look like.
