Default Bypass front AC evaporator?

Hello all,
I replaced my AC compressor, condenser and accumulator due to compressor lockup. All works fine except I think I have a leak in my front evaporator core because I can smell the Freon through my vents. Rather than take out my entire dash to replace the core can I do either of these 2 things?
1) Cut out the rear of the AC/Heater housing under the glovebox to remove the core from inside? From pics and vids I've looked at it appears that the only obstacle would be a plastic device that clamps down over the ends of the core on the inside of the firewall..
2) Can I bypass the front evap core and just use the rear system?
