5.7L MDS Problems
Not sure if I should post this here or in the truck section to make sure it's seen. I guess I'll try here first.
I have a 2007 Chrysler Aspen 5.7L AWD. It's the exact same thing as a durango. I just bought it with 182K miles but, damn this thing is CLEAN. I can't figure it out the frame and everything is 100% rust free and spotless. No grease or anything anywhere. There are a few problems I'm working my way through such as, ripped seats, DVD doesn't work, heater doors are broken in both the front and back, 4WD service light comes on, Park Assist doesn't work, wire loom is an absolute mess, one of the TPM sensors are bad, and the MDS isn't working.
Which brings me to the purpose of this post. The MDS system doesn't work and I want/need it to. When I first got the truck it was a quart low and I put a quart of 5W30 in it. Yes, I know not the right oil.
Problem Started:
Watching the system parameters with AlfaOBD, the MDS system would engage for a split second then disengage and set a P3400 code.
First Attempt to fix:
1. 4 Bolts broken on Passenger side manifold and one stripped out. I removed the broken bolts, heli-colied all of them, and torqued the bolts back down to hole the manifold in place. No more exhaust leak from what I can tell.
2. Replaced Drivers Side Valve cover gasket to fix oil leak. I also replace a bunch of the loom on that side while I was at it.
3. Changed the oil and used 5w20 Royal Purple
Results:
MDS will now turn on for extended periods of time but, at some point a P0171 (Bank 1 too lean) code gets set and then it won't activate. If I immediately pull over and erase the code the MDS will kick on one time for a split second and then kick off and set a P3400 code just like it did in the beginning. This happens EVERYTIME I drive it from a cold start. The system will work, then it sets a lean code, then it sets a P3400. When the P3400 gets set there are no other codes.
What's Next?
I'm not sure what to look at next. The system engages but, something causes a lean code. I'm wondering if maybe as the oil heats up it looses pressure and one of the valves is opened up causing air to be pumped into the exhaust and setting a lean code. Then the system doesn't work after that because what ever causes it to fail is still there. I really think there's something going on with temperature causing the problem. I'm going to watch the oil pressure on my next drive to see if I can nail down what's going on. What are the ranges it should be at?
What else should I be looking for?
