Transmission Stalls Hangs Doesn't Shift Up Down
This is a long story I'll try to make short.
'05 Dodge Durango Hemi Limited 4x4... SO! About a month ago, I'm driving home (about 200 mi.) my engine light comes on. No noise, nothing. I take it in to the dealer, says new wiring harness necessary for engine. Parts are back ordered, repaired, and I'm on my way. I also noted my air bag light came on, seems to come on when my daughter reclines the passenger seat all the way back, but that doesn't happen consistently either. They said, they can't reproduce the problem, again, on my way.
Couple months later, I'm on my way home from the store on the freeway and my car has this loud clunking sound, thought I'd run over a tree in the freeway. Looked behind me and didn't see anything, looked at all my controls, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Once I stopped, I could continue driving just fine and parked. Later that day, I got in my car to drive home, about 1/2 way there (about 15 mi.) my engine light came on, no noise, just came on (very similar to the time a while back noted above). I live way out in the boonies so it was a while before I came to a complete stop, and on a slight incline. When I stepped back on the gas I could not move forward. I rolled back off the road to figure how I could get out of this situation. Put it in 1st and took the OD off and could proceed fine. It would not however shift up to 2nd, even with my manually doing so. Had it towed to the dealer, they reset the computer, couldn't reproduce the problem and I was again on my way.
3 days later! Come to a stop sign, engine light comes on, I don't notice until I punch it to jump out in front of an oncoming car YIKES and have no forward power!!! I quickly drop it down into 1st and punch it again and I could move and avoid a terrible accident! However, still couldn't up shift it into any other gear. I tried one more experiement, put it in park, tured it off, turned it on, put it in drive, took the OD off and I was back in business all the way home! Have it towed to the dealer again, this time, you need a new wiring harness, for the whole entire car! I ask if they referred to my other warranty work and they hadn't so I insisted they contact the other dealer and compare notes. They did, and yes, it still needs a wiring harness. Now, for whatever reason, they've GIVEN me a LOANER to drive if you can believe that! Usually the dealership will just tell you to get a rental and maybe your warranty covers it and maybe not. I've gotten loaners before but it involved a lot of yelling and screaming. This tells me there's got to something more here. Back to the standard "your parts are backordered -- not sure when it will be done". I honestly have no idea if they're even on the right track with this.
My questions are...
1. Has anyone had a similar issue?
2. What if anything could they be doing to make sure my physical transmission is not damaged? (they didn't seem to concerned about this).
Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks!

WOW it sounds like your Dodge Durango has been nothing but problems. Anyway here is my prblem it is some what similar. My 2005 Durange only has 3800 miles on it and when I woke up to drive to work everything was ok half way to work the engine light came on. Durango seemed to be running fine no unusual sounds I parked and went into work when I left work it started like new and the engine light was still on I got home put the durango in park and turned off the car. Went inside the house to change was in house for about 1/2 hour when I came back out to take my family out to dinner the durango again started like new but still engine light was on. When I went to put the durango into drive it would not shift out of park no matter what I would do. the gear shifter will move like I am changing gears but it will still stay in park. I am calling the dealer first thing in morning to see what they say. but I was wondering how many miles your durango had on it before your trans started to have problems. Any Ideas and help on this would be great I want to make sure the dealer is not trying to blow me off.
Thanks
Thanks
Tomboy, I'm so glad you wrote! I didn't bother posting any updates as I hadn't received any replies to this topic. To date, the car is STILL at the dealer! That's 36 days and counting. They have replaced the wiring harness a 2nd time now, to name a few words I've heard them mention, PCM, transmission solenoid, whatever. To answer your question, it was a 17k miles when the check engine light came on. The symptoms you explaine below are EXACTLY what was happening to me, and when I took it in at 17k miles, they also replaced the wiring harness. How many wiring harnesses usually need to be replaced in a new car??? Anyway, at around 22k miles is when the transmission started to have shifting problems. The service advisor mentions to me that they've seen a lot of these?? Wish I would have known that sooner. Needless to say, I now have an attorney helping me pursue lemon law. My advice to you. Stay on top of this! Take it in for every little thing. As soon as they start having electrical problems, it could affect anything. I have gotten nothing but the run around. No one seems to want to help once you start to have issues like this. The only thing the service departmetn is doing for me is offer me a car to drive, which in itself has some definite issues. I'll keep posting updates, and best of luck to you.
My wife experienced with our 05 durango a loss of power after coming to a complete stop at an intersection. When she tried to accelerate the car felt like it was taking off from second gear and almost immediately the check engine light came on. She drove the car home so that I could check it out. it felt like every time I came to a complete stop and tried to accelerate it was stuck in second gear. I finally manually put the car in first gear and everything was fine but the check engine light remained lit. I took it to the dealer and they tried to tell us it was a loose gas cap?? After arguing with the managers that the problem was not a loose gas cap they agreed to put us in a rental and look further into the problem. I got my car back today and they had replaced the front pump in the transmission. This is what they told my wife over the phone. I will let you guys know exactly what was replaced as soon as i find out. We picked up the car after the service department was closed. So far the check engine light has remained off and no loss of acceleration problems.
