Really Bad Gas Mileage on '06
Ok...so I bought my first Dodge 2 weeks ago...'06 V6 3.7, the sticker said that I would get 16 and 21 MPG, but I have been averaging like 10 MPGs. This is really frustrating me...I know the EPA is usually off...but I figured it would only be off by like 1-2 MPGs. Not 6 with a 27 gallon tank. I can't even go 300 miles on the 27 gallon tank. I do a lot of city driving, but this weekend I drove out of town at about 70 MPH for 80 miles and I didn't fair much better (12-13 MPG instead of 10)...I can't imagine trying to tow something - I might as well just pour the gas on the highway...anyway...is this normal? Is it because it's new? Will it get better? Is there something I should check for?
Your fuel mileage will improve as the engine breaks in. Be patient and within a couple thousand miles it will improve. As far as the V6 really getting you that good of fuel mileage not quite sure. The durango is a awful large for such a little engine. This means the engine has to work much harder to get it moving.
I have an 04 Hemi and new at 70 mph I would average 17-18mpg. Now with 21K miles and 70mph, I'm averaging 21-22 mpg. The Hemi believe it or not is a very fuel efficient engine even without MDS if you behave behind the wheel. If you get rowdy behind the wheel and start hot rodding, it gets really thirsty.
Bottom line, be patient, it will improve, but I don't honestly think you will see 16 and 21 mpg.
