Have a 2000 intrepid with 2.7 liter engine..starting to see smoke out of tailpipe when sitting at a red light,(even in summer) and then on take off it gets worst. Any ideas what causes this and any solutions would be helpful.

Well, first, what color is the smoke? White/bluish-white is oil, black is excess fuel. Steam is coolant, and that would be really bad.

Most likely cause is engine wear that results in burning oil, solution is to rebuild or replace the engine. Could be rings or valve seals and guides, but either way the reapair cost will be much higher than adding a quart or two between oil changes. My '99 with right at 100k miles (3.2) smokes a little when I punch it if the engine isn't warmed up. Uses less than 1quart every 3k.I justlive with it.

 

smoke is a white/bluish color....

 

Only when we step on gas hard is when we see the smoke...

 

Could be an early warning sign of sludge buildup.....

The 2.7 V6 in the Stratus & Intrepids are notoriously bad for developing sludge problems and then they just kind of blow up in your face

 

how do i get rid of sludge?
