Default 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7l engine noise

Friend of mine has a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7l and 85,000 miles.Engine has been making a whining noise. The power steering pump was suspected, and replaced - but no change. Whatever is causing the noise is also robbing the engine of power. Ithink either the compressor is shot - or the water pump needs to be replaced. Anyone here have the same problem?

The noise you describe is vague. To aid in T/S'ing, try removing the belts and running the engine (not long) to see if the sound is gone. If so, it is one of the belt driven accessories, if not, it's engine related. This is only a starting point.

I have a similar problem. I hear a whine come from my engine but only when I'm not steering. Once I turn the wheel slightly it goes away but if I turn back the opposite direction it whines again. I'm assuming it's the pump bit haven't got around to changing it yet. My steering seems fine it's just a very loud whine at the moment
