Default Engine shuts off after highway speeds/ and cruze control is also shutting off after 20mins use

Strange things are happening after driving across country and getting to Denver. My car has shut down three times while coming off the highway. All power goes and then I restart... its cranky when I restarts but always does. Now I have learned to stop this behavior by thowing it into N and idle goes back up! Its seems what happens right before it dies is idle drops to about 500.

Now another (related I don't know) situation is my cruze works for about 20mins and just shuts off.. and it won't go back on unless I restart the car!!! What!

SPECS:

2001 Interpid 89,000 highway maily miles!

Help anyone idle control value? timing? suggestions? And why only after the highway speeds... also it doesn't happen all the time.

Its not bad gas either!

THANKS

I've had the same problem in the past, and pulled out bunches of hair before I got it figured out. It was my MAP sensor sticking internally at around the 13 HVG point. Once stuck, the engine timming is computed incorrectly and it putters, and stalls. When restarting, I had my foot all the way downand it barley ran. If left alone for a while, it would unstick, or if I got the RPM's up enough, that would "unstick it also"

I am wondering if this sounds like a torque converter? Or a fuel issue... I have no codes and everyone says CODEs usually show up with sensor problems.... AH!!!

No, the MAP (if sticking) WILL NOT always cause a code to flag. That’s why I said after pulling hair. If you have a good ODB II scan tool, you can see the fail (sticking or stuck and the value...that’s how I know the exact pressure mine was stuck at...by doing a real time diagnostic scan. If your unit is capable, you can see other stuff i.e. TPS position channel A & B, fuel mixture computations etc). If you don't have one, you can always just unplug the sensor as a test (the PCM will use a default value for limp home mode...it won't run great, but the shut down problem should go away).

A fuel pump can cause no starts and hard starts, even stalling, however so can a clogged fuel filter! I thought along that train of thought when I was pulling my hair out. I went as far as mounting a fuel pressure gauge to the windshield to watch what was happening during the malfunction...no help. I'm not saying it can’t be a fuel pump (or filter, which I would change before the pump especially if you don't have the test equipment), but I was rather trying to help give an idea based on my past experience.

PS, whoever everyone is, they are mistaken about the sensor statement....AH!!!

OKAY I fianlly got something for a code!!! P0104... thats the MAP right?
Also got p1683.. can't find what that is yet...

Engine is running a bit rough... but hasn't shut off after tripping the codes.

P1683
SPD CTRL PWR Relay; or S/C 12v
Driver CKT
An open or shorted condition detected in the speed
control servo power control circuit. (SBECII: ext relay)
Strange, my book d/n list P104 but 106, 107, &108 are MAP. I only have 2002 manual and 97 manual though...it could be. I looked on the internet and P104 (generic code) is MAP intermittent. It's an easy fix (and cheep at 40-50 bucks).

The Speed control servo is a cruise control component and probably the cause of your cruise control issue. There is a linking system...vacuum, but the code you have is an open or short (voltage related) so, I'd say it's just a coincidence.
