Default Motor Over Heats But Not Always

I bought an Intrepid for 200 bucks because the owner was told by a mechanic that it had a blown head gasket. The car would only heat up occasionaly. I drove it for about 6 weeks and then finally it over heated and when it started overheating, it was QUICK.

My question is, can a blown head gasket come and go in these cars? I know in the old v-8 motors, its either blown or its not and the symptoms don't come and go.

Could this be a thremostat that sticks sometimes but not all the time?

Thanks to anyone that can take the time to give me some advice!!

I assume low compression would indicate a possible blown head gasket?

Would a thermostat stick occasionally but not always?
