Is this a new one you pressed back in? When I purged my new one, I did not have the tool to make it go back in. All I did was keep pushing it in and out until it stayed in. Then I installed it, then I used a pry bar on the top chain guide. Just push the chain guide back towards the tensioneer and it popped back out.

by the way, your not susposed to release the tensioneer until it is installed. I made mine come out just to see what it was like. All you do is purge it and install. Then push back on the chain guide to make it come out. Make sure your cover over the tensioneer is bolted back up before pushing back on the guide, otherwise it will just fall back out.

I got it working again, got the car up and running. I uploaded some photos if you want to see how broken down it was.

Good luck with your auto.

i have this same problem with clicking noise coming from right valve cover shortly after startup at idle. noise goes away when accelerating but comes back when at idle. i just finished replacing a water pump and water outlet on my 02 2.7 intrepid. i did purge the tensioner of oil but did no reset. just installed the tensioner by holding in the tensioner cover which was a bit difficult to do. do i need to reset the tensioner? buy a new one? buy new tensioner guides? the car was running fine before i installed the water pump which was leaking water out of the weep hole.

Default Re- timing chain alignment

Did you align the chain to the colored links when you put the new chain in? I saw you said the chain when taken apart was about seven links off from lining up.
