Default Help 04 intrepid overheating.

Hello everyone, I have a few questions concerning my 2.7l 2004 intrepid. First of all a little background, I'm in Texas with 100+ degree weather, and over the past few weeks, my car has been trying to overheat on me. This mostly happens when Idle at a red light etc, but does occur while driving as well. When it starts to tick up over half, i turn on my heater and it cools back down below half. I believe this is the thermostat sticking on me, but before I go blow 250 bucks to have it replace I would like some opinions here first. Another question is how possible is this for me to replace on my own, I keep hearing horror stories about having to remove engine mounts etc, but the walk through for replacing it doesnt say anything about removing engine mount and its only labeled as moderately difficult.

On a side note, while looking for the coolant hose, I did notice a faint his coming from my engine as well, this is right after a cold start (well as cold as it can be in 98 degree texas heat).

Any ideas or suggestions would be nice, trying to avoid the $250+ estimates i'm getting for the thermostat.
