98 3.2 How to change the serpentine - AC belts
I have a 98 3.2L Intrepid where the AC belt broke a few weeks ago and now the serpentine belt snapped on the way home. I tried using the link to DYI but it took me to a page with no search results. I'm sure this has been posted 100 times by other users so could some one supply me with a link that shows step by step on replacing these belts please? It just looks really cramped in that front and I m guessing that someone has figured out the best way of doing this. Also about a year ago my transmission line broke and the shop said it was because the belts cut the line, does that happen often with these cars and is there something I can do to prevent it from happining again? Thanks for the help!!!
While it can be done without removing the upper radiator support, that is by far the easiest way for those of us with normal size hands. Bunch of 10mm and (I think) 13mm bolts, a couple 5.5's for each headlight and two platic rivets toward the front center that will need to be punched/drilled, and don't get replaced. Maybe a couple push in retainers as well. It's been a few weeks since I did one.
Be careful not to scratch the fenders when removing it. And you do not need to unbolt the hood release; There is enough cable to simply lay the support assembly on top of the engine.
As for your transmission cooler line, it shouldn't be close enough to the belts to get cut. But they do leak at the radiator. Usually just a case of the rubber getting hard and the clamps no longer being tight. Snug them up.
