Exclamation Engine issue

I have an used 2001 Intrepid which has over 123k miles. I am the fourth owner when I bought it. When I drove the car initially, it drove brilliant and the dealer from whom I bought it had given me a 30 day warranty. Call it sheer coincidence or a strategic sale, my problems began after the warranty had expired.

First I had a problem where the car would not start. I though it could be a battery problem and I did not really bother to break my head on it. And then a week later, I had drove my car for about 10 miles and then when I got back home, I saw steam coming from the hood of the car. The heater also was not working. I asked my dealer about this and he asked me to bring the car in. He took the car to Meineke and got it checked for pressure leak in the water pump. There were none and those guys said the problem of the heater was due to low coolant level. And the mechanic also said that the problem of no start was probably due to a ground wire (dont remember what his exact words were).

And then when I drove the car back home, the heater was working just fine. That was for a day though. The next day again I had the issue of steam coming out of the hood of the car, heater not working. My dealer told me to take it to Firestone and get it checked. On my way, the car stalled, I managed to limp it to Firestone. My dealer who was waiting for me there had a look at the car and said the connecting rod was bent due to engine over heat.

Now the only option I have is to replace the engine. What do you people think? Should I go for it? The noise coming from the engine right now does not sound pleasant at all. The firestone mechanic said the water pump was leaking profusely and the coolant and the anti freeze was getting mixed in the engine.

Any one knows what's going on here? How bad is the situation?

Your engine is done and needs a complete rebuild. You spun a rod bearing, not bent a rod bearing.

The 'mechanics' the looked at your car should have caught the water pump failure right way. It's very easy for a quality technician to determine that issue.

Be prepared for an engine rebuild to run $3000+ and finding one in a junkyard will be near that price. These engines are junk when they came out.
