Default 2001 SE 2.7 front end growling and howling

Hey guys, just got a 2001 Dodge Intrepid from my family, free of course, decent car all around, but every time I drive it, there is a howling sound coming from near the wheels on the front end, and the brakes are getting softer every time I drive it, it doesn't sound like the brakes are grinding, it sounds like a howling and it gets louder when I accelerate. Should I check the brakes, or is it the wheel bearing(s)? I say I think its the brakes becuase the brakes are getting soft, but usually brakes make a grinding sound if they are that bad. People tell me its the wheel bearing(s), but I'm going to take it to a shop to get the brakes inspected, what do you guys think?

thanks

- Andrew
