Default CV joint question

So I got a 99 Intrepid to get me around for a while.. I'm really liking it so far but I think it needs new CV joints. It's making that bang/twang noise while turning on occasion that seems indicative of bad CV joints, from what I've read.

Anyway, my question is, how dangerous is this? I won't be able to afford fixing it for a while, but it needs to get me around town and to work and back & such. If they fail, do they fail catastrophically and can send me into oncoming traffic or anything? I don't know much about cars unfortunately, so I don't know how crucial it is to get them fixed ASAP.

Thanks!
J
