Default Steering noise diagnosis - bad springs?

Hallo

My steering makes a banging / popping noise when I turn the wheel sometimes... whether sitting still or moving. All my google/forum searches suggested that the CV joints were probably bad, but the mechanic says it's the springs (I'm assuming he means the front coil springs). Would bad springs possibly cause the same noise? I'd hate to get them repaired and still have the same problem.

Thanks for any insight..

Noise sitting still, while moving or both? CV is not uncommon on most FWD with high miles or age.

Problem areas were strut mounts/bearings, inner tie rod bushings @ the steering gear, the rack mount bushings themselves or even the cradle bushings. You need a gooood front end guy doing this not a general mechanic. Less likely to get burned. Everyone's hearing is different keep that in mind

It happens both sitting still and moving, but only when I turn the wheel. It's not a consistent rattle or banging noise, it only happens once in a while, like when I turn the wheel it'll "pop" or "twang" maybe once or twice, but that's all. It may or may not do the same thing when I turn the wheel back. Whether or not the car is actually moving doesn't seem to affect it one way or the other.

Hopefully I don't get burned, but my usual mechanic charges way too much and I don't have a lot of money to spare.

I am having a similar "single pop" noise if I turn while reversing, like when you're getting out of a parking spot.
