99 Intrepid - Black fluid under rear of car
Hey everyone,
My Intrepid recently threw a code. The code dictates replacing the evap canister valve solenoid. From what I gather, the only long-term damage this can cause, at minimum, is loss of fuel economy, and the worst that can happen is charcoal from the canister can get into the engine and muck things up.
I don't know if this is related to what's going on at the back of the car, though. So here's what's going on back there. The muffler looks like it has small drainage holes in the bottom so fluid can get out. No big deal. But after running the car for a short time, I see a leak coming from the muffler and close to the cat converter. It's a pretty good leak, too.
The fluid has no odor to it, that I can tell anyway. It's black in color and when left sitting on a cold garage floor all night, it looks gelled, not frozen. So this tells me that if it's gelled, it's not water, unless it's a mixture. Since it has no odor, I don't think it's petroleum-based. So here's what's going on under the hood.
All of the fluids are fine, with one exception. The brake fluid seems to be leaking from somewhere, but I can't find any spots on the concrete. I don't know where it's going to. Possibly related to the liquid at the back of the car?
But of all the fluids in the car, the gas economy has gone to the pits. I'm only getting about 100 miles in-city with 11 gallons of gas (just figured it). I thought the spark plugs may not be firing right, but my normal idle is right around 650-675 RPM in park and 850-900 RPM while in drive and the brake depressed (not moving). While driving, the car doesn't hesitate or stall or have any real performance issues that I can think of.
The engine was also just rebuilt. I think it has less than 5k miles on it. The tranny was rebuilt too.
I know this is a LOT of stuff, but I'm just being complete about all of the issues I've noticed and the steps I've taken. Does anyone have any idea as to what's going on? Could all of this be related? Any help would be hot.

Might be oil leaking past rings and valves getting into the intake and exhaust manifolds causing the evaporation. canister to plug up, poor compression causing the poor gas mileage and oil in the Assistance going out the tail pipe. Id check the compression and take it back to the place you has the rebuild some. As for the brake fluid, the only connection I can think of is a possible broke or loose line when the pulled the engine and transmission out. Inspect the lines near these areas. Good luck
