Default 03 2.7 Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Replacment ONLY

Hello there. I have a 2003 intrepid with a 2.7. Recently i noticed that i had water leaking from the water pump Wheep hole (The hole below the Tstat housing) So i had my dads Mechanic replace the Pump,Tensioner and all guides. When he replaced the pump he "Forgot to change the oil" He started it up. I noticed it immediatly when i saw that he still has the old filter next to him. We shut it off and then found out that i had MILK in the engine. I drained it and replaced the filter. It runs fine now but when it sits running for about 10 min (Normal operating temperature) it starts to Clack and gets louder and louder, If i shut it off and then start it up when it cools down then it sounds normal again. I believe that he recieved a Bad Primary tensioner (I have read some posts on here and have the same issue) so i am going to replace the tensioner. MY QUESTION IS: I have the intake and both valve covers off. can i unbolt the tensioner and replace it with the new one and not have to worry about the timing being off? cause im not taking the chain off. Will it go out of time if i remove the tensioner? I dont think so but i want to be sure. Also is there a gasket for the Tensioner plate? (the plate that bolts to the head to hold the tensioner on) also is it possible that the hole is covered in silicone (Thats what the mechanic use) Please help asap!! thank you

A milky substance in the oil is not normal, when someone overheats
an engine you will get a milky color in the oil, also if you dont purge
remove the air in the engine when adding coolant and water
you could get a blown head gasket.

Is that clank sound a loud Knocking sound?

You need to remove the Valve Covers when installing the
Primary tensioner, right after the Tensioner is in place
you have to retract the Tensioner in place so it puts Tension
on the Primary Guide if you dont do this the Timing will be off!
My best advice have your mechainc fix his mistakes he left

The oil in the water was from when he pulled the water pump off the block there was some residual coolant in the block and when he pulled the pump loose the coolant drained into the oil pan. The car has never been overheated and i am a Maintnence Freak! lol. So to make a story short the coolant is from the water pump install and not changing the oil after the pump was replaced. My Main question is if i take the tensioner loose to replace it do i have to retime the cr (Will it go out of time) if i take the tensiner loose.

The Clank sound is only when the engine warms up (Not all of the time) I believe if it was a connecting rod bearing of some sort it would do it all of the time. And the sound is coming near the front of the engine near the tensioner. (I am a former Shop manager and i know what a rod bearing sounds like and this isnt a rod knock).

For your Info Intrepidspeeder1999 I was injured on the job (Lost both of my legs) and the repair will take me a couple days to repar. I just dont want to waste anymore time doing the repair. Thank you for your Rude comment though Im just as average guy looking for some average info! thank you

No one knows everything about every car. A good mechanic is one that asks questions, tries new jobs and keeps developing his skills so he can be there for the next person. This forum is for all types. The novice and the experts.

Just like doctors, lawyers, computer technicians, nurses, and even professional drivers, there is always something to learn to make you better at what you do. Please keep that in mind the next time someone asks a question, no matter what their profession is.

I am sorry that you aren't getting the help you need. Not sure what kind of questions you are asking though either. We do have a couple of dodge technicians as moderators and as members that troll around looking for those hard questions to answer.

The next time you ask a question and it goes unanswered after a couple of days, shoot me a PM and I will try to answer it or direct someone that can.

As far as your mechanic skills, goto the junk yard and start tearing apart cars. That is what I did when I was younger. I, however, chose to go into biomedical repairs instead though. much cleaner.... LOL!!! Once you see something that you do not understand, come back here and ask. Most of the information that comes out on the forum is best absorbed if you have some idea of what is going on.
