I found this car for $950.00. Needs oil pan gasket,a/c compressor, and lifter making a sound. Has about 140,000 miles and not sure what the motor is,seller did not know. How much you think for the labor on the oil pan and lifter? What about the timing belt/chain and water pump. If i can get it for $500.00 should i and how much for the repairs?thanks

If you get the car for $500 you will put another five in it for parts. Shop around amazon.com and such for parts. God knows what you'll pay for labor unless you do it yourself.

Quote I got for the water pump and timing chain was $900. You can get the timing chains, water pump, and oil pump for $135. Timing cover gasket is $25 or a complete gasket kit for $88 on amazon... So I'm going with a complete gasket set and use what I need.

Bought the same car for $200... I'm doing research and shopping around for parts to work on the car myself. Budgeting about $400 in parts to get the running and ready for inspection. That's including the rear brakes which need work but I'm not ordering that stuff until the engine is not running on coolant.

Lots or reading... lots of research. Engine is a little more complicated than most V6's but it seems doable for the average do-it-yourselfer if you take your time.
All shade tree mechanics and most shops will let you use your own parts. The $900 quote from the shop was $400 in labor and $500 for the water pump, timing chains and gaskets. Not unreasonable.... I'd charge $200 for a job like that though.
