can anyone tell me the differance between the r and the u engine and if they had problems with both or just the r?

All 2.7L engines for the Treps are the same. Do yourself a favor and do a swap from a 2.7 to 3.2/3.5.
Even in the Strat, the 2.7 is an extremely high-maitenence engine and is prone to failure.
