Default Gas Guage not accurate

I have a 2001 neon and the gas guage does not read accuratley. It will show 1/4 of a tank and then after driving for about 5 minutes it moves up to half a tank. Not sure why it does this, anyone have any ideas

well....i dont think the gauge adjusts to gas mileage...like miles per gallon...but ive noticed the same thing....sitting on a hill then going to flat ground will do the same thing....but once the car gets warmed up and the thermostat opens for the first time the car quits pumping as much gas as it does when its first started...

yeah, mine fluctuates a bit. especially if it is sittinguphill/downhill from the fuel moving more to the front or back. just keep a small notebook of your mileage when you fill up. use the trip as well. miles driven since last fill up / gallons this fill up =mpg... wow im a mathematician eh?
