Default Will 1 Gen Muffler fit a 2nd Gen?

Sorry if there's a post about this that I missed, but I was wondering if you can put a 1Gen DOHC Muffler into a 2nd Gen Neon? I ask because I now own a 99 Neon DOHC ATXand I just bought a 2004 SXT ATX.
I know in 1st Gen DOHC the exaust is 2.25", and from what Ive read, the 2nd Gen Neons have 2.25" right until it gets to the exaust where it reduces to 2". So I was thinking about switching the parts that go after thecatso my 2004 would have 2.25" all the way through and maybe gain a bit of HP.
If any one has any other ideas about what parts I could interchange between the two to gain HP on my 04 I'd appresiate the help. Just keep in mind that I do plan to sell my 99 so the part have to be interchangable in order to leave both cars in good conditions.

i was reading on 2gn that a Camaro aftermarket muffler is a direct replacement. Might be a decent way to go since you can find them easily and usually under $100

If the emissions and noise laws there aren't too restrictive...first off, cut out the mid section of your exhaust...it goes from 2.25" down to 1 7/8". You can put in a glasspack (you can get a cherry bomb or something like that for around $25. Then you can just cut out the muffler and just put an exhaust tip on it.
