Gas mileage update

I posted last year that I would update the board on my gas mileage figures as my car breaks in. My 2005 Neon SXT auto now has 24,000 miles on it and I've had it 22 months. I have yet to get 28mpg out of a tankful, but I haven't had to take the car to the dealer for anything either. It turns out between 26.5 and 27.9mpg each tank, which is about 2.5mpg better than it got when it was brand new.
Since I don't beat the car I expected better mileage from it. Is my mileage typical for a Northeast suburban commuter with a Neon?
Regards,
Bill

There seems to be a wide range of mpg numbers out there with no real reason for it. My 2000 auto gets 30-32 and has hit 34 a few times. Having a 5 speed raises mpg by 4 or so as I hear it. My next one will be a 5 speed again. My first neon was a 95 5 speed and at best it got 44 and averaged 40-42 till I changed from Michelin tires to General. Then it went down to 38 and I never hit 40 again. That says a lot for Michelin tires..... They cost a bit more to buy but it seems they have a payback to them.

ive got 3 neons, and they all get different mileage.
96 atx gets 35 all city driving
2000 mtx gets about 26, but i drive it like i stole it.
2005 atx gets 32 mix of city and highway and i baby it, but ive only had it a week, so im not sure thats what the mileage is gonna be.

It really depends on how you drive too. Even more so with a MTX. I haven't done technical calculations to find out my mpg yet. I just made a 35 mile trip and my gas gauge was on the 1/4 mark when I left and was still there when I got to my...destination lol. Barely pushed the pedal and shifted close to 1500 rpms. all city too.
Now for highway when I'm driving...I don't think its better than city. I mean im going about 75 on the highway and my foot is barely down on the pedal and im at about 3500rpms. When I'm going 40 is at about 1500. When I accelerate I almost never go over 1500 and I don't jam the pedal down. I honestly think that i get better city miles.
btw, some might say that the time to distance matters. at the 40mph/1500rpm rate I could go at 80mph/3000rpm. So the fact that im going faster and will arive quicker...i don't think that really does anything.
What do you guys think?

i notice that my highway mileage sucks with the mtx.
only one reason:
no 6th gear.
now if we all would drive 55, then there wouldnt be any issues with MPG. but thats not the case, when i drive over 65, the faster i go, the worse it is, and thats cause theres no 6th gear to lower the revs. Now i know that theres several things i can do, to change the final drive ratio. the easiest prolly would be to get a bigger tire. but round town would suffer. anyway, whatever is done, prolly would cost more than the gas.
