Default Need some help!

I have a 2005 Dodge Neon SXT automatic with about 43000 miles on itand I have run into a problem. Not the firsteither. Last night on my way home, my check engine light came on. While I was driving, my car would not accelerate past 4th gear but continuously reved itself. It seemed like there was something blocking the shifting and just reved and then stopped. It did this about 6 times when the rmps would approach 5000. I immediately pulled over to a gas station and turned off the car. I filled up the gas tank and opened the hood to check for any abnormalities. I found nothing. I replaced the gas cap and closed everything up and proceeded to start the car. It did not rev itself anymore, but once I got back onto the main road the car would not shift past first gear. Thankfully I lived only a short distance away from the station, so I parked it in the drivewayand ran to the forum to see if anyone had experienced the same thing.
Also, a little past history problem that I have been experiencing: Whenever I am at a stop light or just parked and the car is running, it will idle very low. Usually at 500rpms or lower and the car will shake very strongly. Does not matter if the car is in park, neutral, reverse, or drive. Once it has even stalled on me. Any ideas??
I am checking to see if anyone has experienced this same problem or something like it. Also, I want to know what, if any moreproblems people have had with the 2005 neon sxt.
Thanks in advance!

My car idles at 500 when I stop at stoplights and such. I believe for ATX guys it is SUPPOSED to do that. Saves gas and keeps drivability decent.

As far as your tranny issue..I have no clue. I would try changing out the tranny fluid. It'll cost you about $30 altogether, but I have a feeling it's something much more serious. Couldn't hurt though. [&:]

this probably has nothing to do with it, but when i had a 5 speed truck, I busted the clutch (makes me sound like a ****ty driver, but 3 other people learned to drive stick on this truck) and it wouldn't go into any other gear except 1st.. so it could have something to do with that.. but i'm just throwing out a possibility
