Scale them down with the software on your computer and re-save them before you post them. If it's an avatar, it will resize on it's own, all you have to worry about is the KB size of it.

You can use Photoshop, or just make a FREE Photobucket account and you can upload all your pics and edit them there. They also give you the link code for Signatures, Avatars, etc.
