Default Loss of Electrical Power to Radio CD Unit

I have a 2002 Neon with 55000 miles with the basic AM FM Clock Radio with single disc CD player. Starting about 4 months ago (when the 16 yr. old son started to drive it with the music blaring) the power to the unit intermittently stops. No clock, no lights, nothing. If I pull the radio fuse from the fuse box under the hood and put it right back in, power is restored, maybe for two hours, maybe for a week and then we have to do the same thing again to restore power to the unit. The clock has to be reset each time. My dealer has no idea of how to remedy this so I'm turning to the Forum for help.

one thing you can check is the speakers. If he blew a speaker or 2 you can overdrive the head unit which will shut down because it pulls too many amps which will cause it to heat up.

Yeah I believe they have a overload protection circut. If when it turns off you let it sit for a while, will it go back on by itself? The overload on my amps is very quick and will turn back on as soon as the amp cools down, but I don't think you should have to reset the power for it to go back on, it should automatically as soon as it cools.

I haven't checked the speakers yet (I just got home in a blizzard). But no, sitting and cooling down does not cause it to regain power. Only removing and replacing the fuse will restore electrical power. Anyother ideas?

Thanks for your efforts, the dealer says the problem is in the ignition switch causing a short.
