quick question
Aight im at 51XXX miles and i believe the car hasn't had a oil change since I bought it at 47,000. Since I have a little money what is the best oil to put in my 2003 sxt neon. I just don't want to go get a oil change and put any old thing in there. Thanks in advance.
i put some 10x 30 penzoil in mine. read the owners manual it will tell you what to use. you can also run 5x 30 i think. Id get a fram oil filter if your going to change it. it holds 3 1/2 to 4 quarts. Id go with penzoil or quakerstate.
Go with a synthetic, like mobil 1 or royal purple, get whatever oil filter you like, and you can dump in some additives like oil treatment(usually some sort of thickening agent). Weight really depends on your environment and driving conditions
For 2004 they go on to recommend an oil that meets ms-6395 (basically GF-4) or synthetic oil meeting SAE and API criteria.
So with the same engine I would say any GF-4 oil which meens most oils now available. Just check the bottle for proper formulations.
The GF-4 spec forced the oil manufacturers to upgrade there oil from base stocks to additives and produce an much finer oil.
I have been using Mobil conventional 5W-30 as the new formulation of 10W-30 has not arrived (still just GF-3) and it is pretty inexspensive. If you want to use Synthetic try Mobil1 or Dead Barney(Royal Purple) both very good. Money no object I still say RED LINE OIL. If you live were it gets below 0°F then use 5W-30 for the winter and Castrol recommends 10W-30 for the rest of the time.
A couple of years back Consumer erports did a big story on oil and found if you use regular oil, OIL is OIL. They also found no difference in running sytehtic but htere choice of engine did not stressit to bad with a Chevy V6. However the newer Corvettes REQUIRE synthetic to survive, not just semi-syynthetic either, but full synthetic.
Oil filter generally come down to just about 3 real brands. Champ, Fram, Purolator. Found an interesting website that a guy tears them apart and compares them and found that with few exceptions most are close to each other and boil down to really just the 3 above (Also why the numbers are so simular to other brands). Mopar was found to be just a FRAM and Mobil1 was a CHAMP with better filter media and actually a good filter.
