(I've never seen that before. Sorry, guys, I'm still a little new at this. I can do tune-ups, oil changes, shocks, struts, SYEs, suspension lifts, brakes and wheel bearings, but as for the rest...) I'll check them both as soon as I find the ramps that hubby buried in the shed. :-)

As for the second problem, I think we might have figured it out. My daughter started complaining about "ringing" in her right ear every time I pushed on the gas, so I tried to duplicate. Sure enough there is a very high-pitched whistle every time I press the gas. I hadn't noticed it before because the windows have to be rolled up and the radio off before it presents. Sounds like possibly an injector fouling out? We'll check that one out this afternoon. I'm also going to recheck the plugs, just to be sure that there is no problem there.

Man, I really appreciate all of the help you guys are giving me. I know I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to dxing engine problems.

THX!
A high pitched whistling noise? Sounds to me like you may have a small vacuum leak then. That could explain a lot about your hesitation problems, and more importantly it could explain why you are having more issues at high RPMs. Check all of your vacuum lines, PCV line, brake booster, etc etc, make sure nothing is loose or disconnected.

And it is normal for the motor to do a little bit of rocking, but nothing drastic. Neons seem to be notorious for motor mounts going bad after 60k miles or so. Either replace them, or get some prothane inserts for them.

My suggestion is to get the prothane inserts that will remedy that popping noise for sure... what i am betting is that the Motor Mount (MM) is shot and the bolt that goes through it is hitting the actual mount b/c the rubber in there is shot... thus creating your "popping" noise.... if it isn't that i would def. say that it is the bushings... also the whistling and the High RPMs at idle... i would replace the PCV valve (very inexpensive... long as its not from the dealer), and check the rest of your Vac. lines make sure none are disconnected, loosely connected, stripped, cut, or crinked that should fix most if not all of your problems...

I would bet the lower control arm bushings. Getting the same front end noise you are describing. Jack the car up and look at the bushings. When I did this I noticed a big tear on the bushing on both sides of the car. The dealership also told me/showed me there is a service bulletin on an issue with the steering column. They want to replace it first. I'm trying to see if chrysler will cover it under warranty. It only has 42k miles which I know is out of warranty mileage wise but the problem probably started while it was in warranty. Anywise definitely check out control arm bushings.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys! We checked all of the things you suggested, and found one of the problems...the right side engine mount is cracked and broken. When we got to really trying to find the whistling, it was coming from the airbox. The gasket was out of place and making a whistling noise.

I appreciate all your suggestions. We had been at our wit's end trying to figure this out and it turned out to be simple stuff like this. Duh!! We're still checking your other suggestions, and have decided to go ahead and replace all of the bushings while under the car. (the bushings in the gear shifter have already rotted out and we just replaced them, so, if they were rotten.....) Not to mention it only has 140,000 miles on it.

Thanks again!
