Default BRAKE indicator light comes on when starting in 1st gear.

I'm new to the site and excited to find it. I just bought a very nice 2000 Plymouth Neon 5 speed, 16 valve/4 cylinder with 107k miles. Timing belt and water pump have been done. Very, very well maintained car.

When we start up and leave a stop from 1st gear the red BRAKE light on the dash illuminates and rings as I start my acceleration in first gear. Once I shift to second gear it goes off. The emergency brake is completely disengaged.

Anyone have this problem or know of the fix for this annoyance?

Nice call. I'll double check that but I'll put money on your call that it's the problem.
Thank you!

your welcome sir. I hope that is the only problem but if it is low you might have a leak so if its the problem then pump your brakes up and check for squirting onto the ground for a leak.

ill bet on that being the problem :-P b/c the sensor is in a funny place so when you are a little low on brake fluid and u accelerate the fluid sloshes away from the sensor which causes the brake light to go on

It was indeed low in the resevoir of brake fluid. No leaks to speak of; filled it up and problem was fixed.

Smile Brake light and "ding" from 1st gear

I had the same problem, started out of the blue. I read about adding brake fluid, but the real problem was the brakes were worn down.

I replaced the front brakes myself with Wagner Ceramics.

Apparently I did it right, cause I stop without the "Fred Flintstone" method.
