Default 2000 Neon Auto trans problem.

I need help.

I have a 2000 Neon LS Automatic. It is having problems getting into gear at times, I put it in Drive but sometimes it doesnt go into first or it will act like its in nuetral. Other times when I pull up to a red light completely stopped and slowly hit the glass the gear doesnt catch. I can hear the engine going up the car acts like its in neutral, you can also hear some grinding. I brought it to a mechanic and he said one of the cylinders is bad and that was the problem. He was asking for 2k to try to fix it or 4.3k to replace the trans. I brought it to another auto mechanic and he changed the transmission fluid, but it the problem still occurs.

I plan on bringing the car to an auto shop that specializes in transmissions.

Has anyone had this problem with an auto trans before?

Might this be a good time to start thinking about a switch to a manual transmission? I would imagine that $4300 is probably approaching or surpassing what the car is worth in excellent condition. I guess you could try to find a good trans, auto or manual, at a salvage yard.

you need your tranny rebuilt. a reputable shop can do it for 1300 bucks. if you don't have it done soon, you won't be able to even drive it anywhere and then you will have to get it towed.
