tranny question

My friend is wanting to know does a 1st gen tranny fit in a 2nd gen. both are 2.0 sohc and both r five speed. will this swap work?

96 and up should b fine as long as the 2gn is a cable not hydraulic, i plan on getting a tranny wit a 3.95 final ratio from a 1st gen
