A New Neon Project
Aah who cares about ride quality. Yeah 215/35/18 is what i run on mine. I would say go with the hyper black ones. If you go 17's you have to go with the 205/40/17 since 45's would rub on hard turns.
strange... my registration slip says it was an '05, but my title (i had lost the title and had to get a replacement for the insurance company to total it out, but then afterwards found the original, anyway..) the title says it was an '04. I know the dealer said it was an 05. Which seemed very believable considering it only had 12k miles on it in january of 07 when I bought it. I suspect the '05 bit may have been a marketing ploy, but with 12k miles on a showroom condition car, who cares?

So yeah, back to the red '03...
Turbocharging:
I've been pouring over the prices of parts & such for many of the mods I want to do to the car. But I have a big blank spot in the budget where the turbocharger goes. As I said I've no first hand experience with turbochargers.
- Does anyone have any particular advice regarding turbocharging an 03 SXT stock engine?
- What brand of turbocharger would you recommend?
- What are 'all' of the parts that will be required?
- Would you recommend someone with mediocre mechanical skills attempt it themselves? (by mediocre I mean mechanical experience with most things external to engines/transmissions)
- If not, what would be a reasonable price for installment from a mechanic?
- I've heard of turbochargers with adjustable boost settings, any advice regarding those? The idea of having an in-dash switch to toggle between 4 psi / 8psi (or something like that) sounds kinda cool to me.
- Speaking of which, what effect does the boost have on engine wear? As in, would 6psi be less abusive than 8psi? or is there little difference as long as you stay inside of safe parameters?
- Intercoolers, 'the bigger the better'? or 'enough is just right'?
- Where is a good place to buy the parts?
- What about emissions regulations?
Please bear in mind that I'd like a pretty noticeable boost in horsepower over stock, but I'd prefer not dealing with internal engine modifications (at least not at this time). I do however plan to customize the entire intake & exhaust from air filter to tailpipes. I'm not interested in anything which will burn up the engine anytime soon. If i'm sinking all this money into the car, then I really need the engine to last a while. sub-200hp is fine with me, if it means reduced cost and/or longer engine life. But it definitely needs a lot more than 132hp, and I know that intake & exhaust by themselves will not be sufficient.

well to answer ur questions on boost... it wares and engine down in not properly built bottom end and top end.... sub 200 u are looking at about 8psi of boost, and i would go with a srt turbo setup, for a reliable setup and a nice boost to power the car...
fuel is one of the most improtant things in a turbo set up, the right amount of fuel the longer the car will last, the better a/f ratio will also make the car last longer.... how may miles are on this car? i would recomend a garrett turbo, great turbos and come stock on most stock turbo cars.
installing a turbo is not the hard part it is the tuning... as with the adjustable boost controls, i dont know how that would work, but i would think u would have to someway have a way to tune at both boost settings...
all an intercooler is a radiator that cycles air and not coolant, cooling the air going into the turbo there for giving u more power and better responce. I am currently running an intercooler rated for 400hp, not sure how it will hold up when i do hit the 400 hp, more than likely i will have to go a bigger intercooler for an effeciant cooling....
as for a list of parts it will take me to come up with one,
are u thinking of running just a rrfpr? or going ms or something like that to tune???
what state do u live in? some of the restrictions are a bitch to deal with depending on state laws.... i am drive my car in ny and it sucks, i have alot of work to do to get the thing to pass inspection... but this year i will have it figured out... (i hope) hope i helped and feel free to ask more questions
hmmm, so an srt-4 turbo setup, with a garrett turbo?
I hadn't thought about what to do to regulate fuel. I'd assume an adjustable rrfpr is the way to go? I'd like something that wouldn't raise my fuel pressure except in response to actual boost.
To my thinking, the ideal would be for the boost threshold to start at just above the highway cruising rpm (probably around 2700-3000rpm under light load). It wouldn't be hard to get it quickly into that range and keep it there when I *want* to. And when I'm driving like a grandma I'd get NA gas mileage and wear&tear. but i don't really know jack about turbocharging, so if i'm thinking wrong, lemme know
__
oh, and it has 53,xxx miles on it. It runs nice & smooth. It idled a little rough at first the other day, but it had sat 3 days and it was -5 deg F outside (with regular cheap oil in it).
I have yet to convert it to synthetic blood, waiting for a little warmer weather to do that. I know the car would benefit from getting it while its still cold, but i'm not driving it a lot right now, and I don't relish the idea of being under the car in snow (and I don't want to pay someplace $60 for $15 worth of brand-X synthetic oil and a substandard filter). When I can though, it'll be getting some mobil-1
I'd like to replace everything in it with synthetic fluids while I'm at it. and get the orange radiator fluid. and replace the plugs. and see about getting some mopar atf+4 too. and taking a clay bar to a few areas, and then a thick coat of wax. you know, all the little things
__
I like the hyperblack ones too. and they're the perfect size 17x7 and +35 offset. The weight on the 18x7.5 version is 23lbs, so the 17x7 should be around 20-21lbs, which isn't bad.
as for 205/45R17 tire size, they *should* be like 2% smaller than the 205/55R16's I ran on my R/T (which didn't rub). Then again i've heard someone on this forum mention that their 205/45R17's did rub (albeit only slightly), so perhaps there is some bit of geometry i'm not looking at right. or it could be a difference in offset.
Also, I was wondering if anybody has tried 215/40R17's? do they rub? and at what offset? I'm thinking 215 could fit if it wasn't too tall, and the wheel offset was right. For example, 215's should have about the same clearance as 205's at the same sidewall height, IF the wheel offset was +40 on the 205's and +35 on the 215's.

Rising rate reg is an option.... people do it all the time with a rrfpr. i am going alittle more indept because i am running nitrous along with the turbo... but the ms is a very effective way to go... cant wait to get my car running... so now that i know that here is a fast list that u will need... with an srt turbo and manifold
turbo,
manifold
adapter plate to go from sohc to dohc man
all lines (oil, coolant)
downpipe
bov
intercooler
intercooler piping
rrfpr
returnline
vacuum hose
boost gauge
a/f ratio gauge
fuel injectors prolly 36 lb would work for low boost app.
also is ur computer stock? if so remember that there is a posiblilty that it will throw a light, more than likly a o2 sencor code till it is running properly... depends on the state u live in if that will really matter for inspection or not....

cool, thanks
i've been looking at some of the kits and what all parts they involve. and also at how those bits go into the car, what they do, etc.
the state i live in has random testing, they pull your name out of a hat and tell you to get your car checked for emissions. i've never actually been tagged with having to do it, but i know several people who have. the neighboring state has stricter regulations, and i could end up moving there. So I would need an emissions legal setup. not as harsh as california standards, but some emissions inspections are a possibility.
Also, I wouldn't be real happy about having a bad o2 sensor light in the dash. 'check engine' is no way to be cool. But I don't need crazy high levels of power either. 132 doesn't cut it. 150 was very nice, but i still wanted more. 200ish should satisfy my lead foot just fine.
And gees the kits are expensive! doesn't hann want to market a stage1 or 2 kit for the 03+ neons? I'm guessing oem srt turbo parts would save a lot, and from what i've come to understand, it shouldn't be hard to adjust it to the parameters I want (like 7psi or so with a late-ish spoolup).

ok, so after carefully examining the budget and refining the exact costs of various things... I can either get the turbo but skip a lot of other things I wanted to get, or get pretty much everything but the turbo.
But I don't think that the UDP, and complete intake & exhaust will by themselves offer all that much power to the stock engine unless i get a cam for it (& springs). So I'm kinda leaning that way right now... just getting the absolute best the engine can put out while still N.A.
so powerplant-wise, I'm thinking like this:
CAI
55mm throttle body
milled intake manifold
R/T cam & lifter springs
MPx underdrive pulley
short tube header
high flow cat
SRT4, RT, or aftermarket/custom cat-back
should be around $2500 for all that if i do much of the work myself. I think the end result (transmission notwithstanding) should be mildly more potent than a stock R/T.
any thoughts? tuning advice? brand advice? etc?
if i'm going in deep enough to change the cam, what *else* would you upgrade while in there?
__
Then under the car, I am thinking thusly:
1" lowering springs
matching shocks & struts
rear antisway bar
17"x7" 21lb. +35mm offset ace manta's in hyper black
215/40R17 tires
should be around $2500 again.
any thoughts? brand advice? etc?
__
Exterior:
SRT-D front bumper
foglights
mopar front lip
mopar/RT sideskirts
mopar rear bumper skirting.
rounded lip spoiler
some flame red paintwork
The main reason I had preferred the srt-4 bumper was that the srt-4 bumper has a nice front lip. but seeing as I've found that a very pretty bolt on mopar front lip exist for the srt-d (and it perfectly matches the RT style sideskirts which are my favorite) I am now thinking I'll get an srt-'D' bumper for it, and a front lip. The price estimate on all this is still un-calculated but should be safely under $2000
(erg, searching for an srt-D bumper isn't going to be easy is it?)
Interior:
3M ceramic window tint - 35% all the way around, including front sunscreen
A pair of quality 6x9 rear speakers, a small amp to power them adequately, and a bit of mounting work.
I've decided to make the interior 2-tone black & gray. Since it is mostly gray already, but has some black bits, I'll just add some black paint here & there to create a more eye pleasing blend (photoshop forthcoming!).
price estimate around $500
__
total $7500-ish
Things I'll have to pass on because they're just going to cost too much:
turbo
Things which will have to wait for more financing:
minicuda hood and the custom painted wide black topstripes
black leather seats
thoughts? ideas? props? advice? criticisms? likes? dislikes? favorite food?

I like Pizza..... ( does that work??)
HOnestally tho, your list looks fine, you can start with the list and move from there, that is what I did on mine. My engine was NA for the longest time, and I just need to change it a bit around. The only thing that I can say is with the SRT-D front bumper, and turbo you would have some cooling issues. My buddy has teh SRt-D front on an 01 R/t with a SRT motor swap and he was having trouble keeping the car cool, since the FMIC covers the whole area, and the SRT-4 Front has those extra nostrels to help cool the radiator down a bit more. Now lets see some pics and progress..

i also like pizza.... (inside joke with me and my girlfriend) LOL.... it all started with the line "soo u want to get pizza and f.u.ck sometime??? what u dont like pizza??" haha ok down to busness
looks like a good list to me also... and nate is right about the srtd bumper, i have hurd the same thing.
as for ur head question with a cam, if u are going to do that, u might as well port and polish the head, and put valves and springs in it while u do the cam, u will see a nice differnce in just that mod, but expect to spend around 1500 to do it all...
as for the suspension, i would go with eiback pro kit seeings u r looking for about a one in drop, and for swaybars u could go stock srts u could get on ebay cheap or upgrade to an hotchis swaybars...
the only thing about the header is that depending on how long u think u will keep ur car na, the header might be the thing to cut out... just a thought, u will waist about 200 dollars on ur header when u go and pull it off when u put ur turbo manifold on, i learned that the hard way....
the exterior mods sound good to me, not to much and, kinda like my car...
good luck and lets see this thing start coming together!!!!

I used to deliver pizza
so yeah, I may end up with an SRT-4 bumper rather than an SRT-D bumper anyway, simply because I'm having real difficulty finding one. there's the one at howell, but that's not the stock factory one, and has its own front lip. actually, i was tinkering with a paint scheme which keeps the stock bumper on it, and just adds the mopar lip kit all the way around. not sure if i like it or not though, but it would be cheaper. I'm not too fond of the 03+ stock sxt/se bumper. i don't mind that its minivan based, the stratus manages to make the look work very well. its just that it looks almost like they designed the neon version with the idea in mind that if they made it look too good, people might buy less stratus's (strati?)
hmm $1500 on the engine internals? that's not too bad. I'd have to find a few places to shave money out of the list though.
I don't *need* foglights really, especially if i eventually go HID, so i could drop those and just put a screen in the opening. if it was an srt-d bumper i'd cut out the opening some to do that. ok actually this brings me to a question:
I have heard people say you can put an srt bumper on a non-srt neon, and it will just have a gap... but i have also heard people say you can put an srt hood on a non-srt neon and it will just have a gap... now logically, one would have a gap, the other would have an overlap... which is it?
also, anyone got pics of a car with the howell automotive srt-D bumper with mopar sideskirts? the howel bumper has build in front lip, and i'm very curious how well that would match up with the mopar/RT sides. I prefer the oem srt-D bumper with the mopar lip really, but i'm not finding any oem srt-D bumpers out there. (does the srt-D bumper need a new pad insert? or does it work with the stock sxt one?)
ok i'm going to go finish up some photoshop work on the interior paint idea

here's a couple ideas:
interiorblack.jpg?t=1235237116
interiorred.jpg?t=1235237159
really i think it'd look best in all black&red, but there are parts of the interior which are gray and i'm not sure how to make them black with just paint (like the steering wheel). and having just a couple mismatched pieces in light gray would look really bad, so i'm trying to figure a way to blend black & gray... really I'm not fond of light gray interiors.
