Default 2004 Neon Drive Cycle

My 2004 Neon just failed emissions, and I was told I needed to complete the drive cycle. Could it be because my alternator needs to be replaced? If not, how do I complete the drive cycle?

A drive cycle, if I remember, is simply taking the car for a drive?

A drive cycle is different for each manufacturer. You have to meet specific criteria to complete them. I.E. drive x mph for x miles, slow to a complete stop or to a specific speed and accelerate to x mph again.

Normally driving it for 1 or 2 days will reset all the monitors and be ok. I have have heard Saturn has really odd and specific drive cycle specs.

Yes your alt could be a problem, may not be meeting a voltage requirement to run a test or something.

If I can remember to put the manuals on my computer (just did a reformat), I will try and look up what Dodge says is a drive cycle for these cars.

Is the drive cycle when you have a CEL then after a couple hundred miles it disappears (but the code is still there)?

No, that just sounds more like a "soft" code.

Just found this online though:

This is a Chrysler/Dodge specific drive cycle (Chrysler's tend to be easy to pass through, so if it hasn't gone through after a few days of regular driving, there is probably a problem):

Check engine light off, codes cleared; cold start.

-Warm up engine 5 minutes (or until closed loop is reached--5 min is usually plenty)

-Drive (w/ steady throttle) at a steady speed between 40 and 60 mph for 8 min

-Stop and idle 3 min

-Drive (w/ steady throttle) at a speed above 20 mph for 2 min

-Turn key off, leave off 10 min

At the very least, usually a day or two of a mix of highway and back road driving will complete all the monitors.
Basically, just go drive the car for a bit.
