Default 05 neon cps cel comes on intermittenly

A neighbor of mine has been having a problem with his neon where his cps(cam position sensor) light comes on and car goes into limp mode, turns it off and restarts it but then will come back on when ever it wants. He put a new sensor in from advance and it was fine for about a week then starting acting up, so i went and got one from napa and put it today so i hope it might just be the quality of the sensors. If it doesn't get better what else could be causing this problem? timing off maybe?

could be the connector is dirty or there could also be a short to ground.

i gets nothing but i love brad penn and i suggest anyone building a high performance motor to run it. It's mostly known in the drag racing world and the pa area. It is pumped and refined and sold in bradford, pa which is only 30 minutes from my house in ny. You can order it online though.

Check the wiring harness. Most importantly the exposed wiring where it meets the connector. Mine did this when there was a nick in one of the wires.

I think some sensors come with new wiring. It would be wise to use it if it came with it.

the one he bought didnt come with the wires and connector, the first one he purchased did but he threw it out, when i put the second one in i pull back the wire wrap and inspected the wires and they looked good, i wanted to check continuity from a few inches back on the wire to the pin but my fluke meter stopped working.... My scanner picked up code P0340 any chance that has to do with crank sensor also? or should he get another with the harness?

P0340 is not the crank sensor. It is the camshaft sensor. Are these all aftermarket sensors? If so, I would personally use a factory part. I believe there was another person on here who kept going through aftermarket sensors, switched to the Dodge part, and it fixed the problem. It seems certain parts just have to be factory for them to work right.
