Laser Jammer -- Getting Through the Firewall
Hello, everyone. I am the owner of a 2001 Dodge Neon SE and I am currently installing an Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter on my car. I would have no trouble completing this if I could just get past the firewall. Looking under the carpet, I found two rubber plugs. One is behind the brake pedal and the other is behind the gas pedal. I saw people state on other forums that these were easy access points through the firewall. However, when I pushed a straightened clothes hanger through the rubber plug, I hit something solid. Is anyone familiar with the points I'm referring to? Is it safe to drill at either one of them? I looked at the grommet that all my factory wires run through, and that hole seems to narrow for anything else to fit. Maybe my eyes are deceiving me. The connectors for the front sensors of my laser jammer have phone-jack connectors on the end, so I need a hole that is at least a centimeter in diameter. I would appreciate any advice that any of you could give me, especially if you've had to deal with this problem yourself before. Thanks in advance.
i have an o4 and when i drilled a hole through my fire wall for my system i found a big opening on the pasenger side...i know it probably has to be on the driver side for you but there is alot of room on the other side of the firewall to drill!!!
Thanks, Casper and Neonsxt. Casper, when you ran your wires through the plugs, did you have to go through the plug and then up over the top of the firewall, or did the plug run straight through to the other side of firewall? The problem I'm currently having is that I got through the plug and seem to be hitting a wall. I guess I'll try what Neonsxt suggested and search around on the passenger side. The only reason I never considered that before is that I'm trying to stay as far away from the engine as possible. Thanks again to you both for your help.
you might wanna get a friend to help you that way one can be by the drillin and the other can make sure you dont hit anything...dont use a drill bit thats 2 feel long lol i almost drilled a hole through the alternator lol....good luck with it all though
I ran mine on the drivers side kind of near where the fuse box is. There is a plug there and I attached the wires to a metal hanger and pushed it through the plug thing when I did my mopar guages.

when i instaled my system i ran it threw there also. there is a hole to the left of my break pedel. It went right threw fine. On my friends eclipse i couldnt find a hole so i drilled threw it. and worked just as well.
I finally finished the install this past weekend. I ended up having to drill. Even though I had the rubber plugs available, for some reason, there were no pre-drilled holes on the inner firewall. I couldn't use the hole near the fuse box because of the phonejack connections on the end of my wires. Once I drilled the hole, I used two metal coat hangers to fish the cord through. I used one hanger to push the cord down through the outer firewall, and the other hanger to hook and pull the cord through the hole that I drilled in the inner firewall. It was more work than I expected, but I'm glad I didn't pay a "professional" $200+ to do it for me. Thanks to everyone for all your help.
