Default haunted?

I wired my cooling fan to a toggle switch...switch to power - to relay - to fan... After I wired everything I hooked the neg battery back up and the hazards flashed a few times, and then the engine started! The key was not in the ignition, there's no remote switch (i don't think), and the only thing that is connected outside of the fan and switch is the positive battery terminal. I didn't splice into any wires for power or ground. It only happened that one time (and scared the hell out of me) and this was after testing the same configuration a few times already (before drilling holes for the switch etc)
It seems like there's a lot that needs to happen for a car to start...how could just attaching the neg back to the battery do it?? If there was a remote starter that I didn't know about where would the wiring be/what would it look like?? Anyway, everything is working now and seems fine. I'm just wondering how it happened.

I don't see how. The only thing that's connected to anything outside my little fan project is the positive battery terminal.

some novice rookie probably hacked with the wires and did something to cause a short (not a dead short but an short to a component bypassing it's control). sounds like time to have an actual wiring diagram

so do something to rectify that situation. hardest thing to fix it something that's been hacked and screwed up.
