Default engine sounds?

2004 Dodge Neon SXT 2.0L SOHC - 65,000 miles, manual

When running anywhere under 2,000 RPMs, my engine makes a kind of grinding sound. also, I don't know for sure, but my rear view mirror also shakes so bad that i can't even see what is behind me. that might be because of the huge crack in my window though. The sound is almost like a mixture of roller blade wheels and a diesel Jetta engine. As soon as i hit 2,000 though, the noise stops. It's been this way for a while and I'm growing more concerned. Its not too loud of a noise, i really only hear it when the stereo is off. Can anyone relate to my issue? What could be some possible problems? Clutch, Timing Belt, etc haven't been replaced since i bought the car and i highly doubt the previous owner did.. i bought the car with 60,000 miles. a record of periodical check ups and oil changes have been kept so i know its been somewhat taken care of..

Maybe do an oil analysis. It will show specific excess wear metals, if something really is grinding or not "behaving," that could help pinpoint an internal engine problem.

"My 2004 Neon (2.0L SOHC 5 speed manual) does the same exact thing... but only when the rpm's are under 2000. I've noticed the noise more in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. The car is also very buzzy while making the noise. It honestly sounds like the engine is lugging but 1800 rpm under light acceleration shouldn't be lugging. Anyone have any ideas for us?"

im having this SAME EXACT problem! there was also 2 other cars with this same issue on the website i found this on! nobody knows what do to though..
i was told to consider replacing spark plugs and spark plug wires, and something about a cam sensor. do you think it could possibly be my clutch or timing belt? i highly doubt either has been switched out since i got the car, which now has currently 68.000 miles. if not, i just hope my sxt engine will last me long enough to afford an engine swap with an srt-4 :]
