Question Blower motor or resistor?

I have a 2002 Dodge Neon SE with 135k miles.
Its heating/cooling system works great (mostly cooling down here in FL) and gives me very cold air when I need it.

The problem is that consistently, about 1 hour in to a long drive, the blower motor goes down to half-power and starts making a lot of noise. All four settings for fan power are still there, and the air is still cold, but the flow rate goes way down and the noise goes way up. Instead of a constant whirr there's a lot of random whooshes. It almost seems like it's blocked somehow.

But if you leave the car (or just the blower) off for a while, everything goes back to normal.

I've dropped the car off at a couple of places and they've just given me a 'can not replicate.' 'Well did you leave it on for an hour' 'No sir we left it on for half an hour and gave up.' 'Well that's why!' 'Sir please take your car and leave.' So I want to try to fix this myself. I have one of those paperback books on how to fix this type of car along with a full set of screwdrivers and wrenches but I don't have a multimeter or anything like that. If someone could just tell me the name of the part to go for it would be pretty simple for me to just go to Advance and replace it by the book.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

Have you driven to the point that it makes the noise, then gone to a shop and asked them to come look at it then and there so they can hear what is going on?

the reply you get from shops indicates to me that maybe you come across wrong with them... In my shop, I'd use the car for lunch or something when I needed to take a errand to replicate. shops really don't have the time to pay a guy to sit and watch for this to come up. maybe you could just have the blower replaced (not that expensive) and see it that solve it.

I agree with Sapporo. You can easily replace the blower motor or the resistor on your own and save some money. It could be the resistor, but they usually just die. The blower motor is a different story. The bearings in the motor may be going away and as it heats up they cause more drag = slower speed and noise. If it were mine, I would try the blower motor first since it is making noise.
