2004 Dodge Neon SXT Help PLEASE!!!
Hi,
I pulled into a local gas station last week and when I put the car in park the engine reved way up to 4000RPMs for about 3-4 seconds the when down. When it idled the RPMS would fluctuate, but not like it was about to die on me. It seems as if it is reving up and then down reving up and then down. When I started it back up the engine reved to 4000RPMS again and then did the same thing and the RPMs began to fluctuate. It is at this time I notice smoke and a smell of burning oil coming from the air filter duct. I opened it up and my air filter had oil in it. All this happened at one time. I have had a bad Valve Cover Gasket for a few weeks but I have checked the oil everyday, and it was fine. My guesses are Throttle Position Sensor or reflashing the PCM, but neither of those explain the air filter problem. That may be because of the bad Valve Cover Gasket though. No one that I have heard complaining about reflashing the PCM has mentioned the car reving that high at start up. Any help would be appreciated.(I know Valve cover gaskets are cheap and easy to fix I shoulda done it earlier... The irony is I was gonna go get the kit in a couple of days when I got paid)
