Question 2003 SXT brakes

The left rear brakes on my 03 SXT locked up the other night...started the car and began to back up and I was dragging that wheel along. A mechanic that doesn't know much apparently said it was caused by rust interfering with my calibers back there which would be great...if I had any. I'm not sure if it is just my car or not but I have drums in the back. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing it and is it an easy DIY fix? Thanks!

Since you have drum brakes, it could be a bad wheel cylinder. That's the "caliper" on drum brakes.

thanks everyone for your suggestions! i ended up taking it to a mechanic to have all of the breaks just totally changed because my fronts were getting worn too. he said that something was wedged in that drum.
