Default is it the transmission or the gearbox?????

I have an 01 neon se, and its been very reliable up till now. its got about 142,000 miles or so on it and haven't had any problems till this week. Its making a slippin/grindin sound when switching gears or accelerating from a copmlete stop, its an automatic three gear transmission. It has adequate fluids but still makes the sound could it be the transmission or the gearbox?? Any realeveant replies would help thanx.

"Gearbox" is a term for transmission.

Could need the bands adjusted, fluid and filter changed...it wouldn't hurt to check for codes.

Turn your key from the off position to on, off, on, off, then hold in the on position without starting the car. The odometer will show you codes. Or you could go to Autozone and have them use their code reader which will be more in depth.

The odometer doesn't seem to show transmission codes. I'd try an actual reader if it is something to do with the transmission.
