Default P0340 - How to trigger it?

I was wondering if anyone know what you have to do to make the computer check the CMP again for a P0340?

I have a 2003 Neon (the normal, boring version ) and I just got a P0340 error today (no other codes). As some background, I replaced the CMP ~3-4 years ago after getting an Intermittent code on the CMP. P0344 I believe. Anyway, I went to reset the codes and, saying I did it correctly, it was trigger instantly again! Is that even possible (such as if there was no signal?)?

I let the car cool a bit while I looked up the code and came back out. I simply located the CMP and traced the wires. I then reset the light and this time no issue!

I drove it around the block and checked for pending codes and... nothing. So either my CMP is on the fritz or I have short in the wiring that I jiggled (or something to do with the heat from the short drive I made when the code came on?). Or worse: there really is something odd going on with my timing.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

(btw, I'm an Electrical Engineer - concentration on Computers though - so I apologize for my lack of mechanical insight!)

as crazy as this may sound, I've had a lot of these codes caused by the crank sensor when the engine gets hot and driving over 20 min. just for giggles check the crank sensor. unplug and inspect for oil in the plug. if you have oil, the sensor should be replaced (CKP)

Oil in the plug is a good thing to check for, as well as the wiring. It can and does get bad. Dodge specifically makes re-wire kits for the sensors.

Will do - thanks!

Is it normal for oil to get in their or is that a sign of a bad gasket somewhere?

Worn/bad gasket. The sensor should be replaced if covered in oil, and the new sensor should come with a new gasket. Stick with a Dodge part, too.
