Default Battery Light on a 01 Neon

I just had to replace the PCM on my 01 Neon because I had the 0601 code on my old computer and a 1648 code. So I install the new PCM and upon starting it my battery light came on and the battery is not charging. So my thinking the PCM I just got was faulty so I exchange it for another reman unit. Same thing no charge on battery. I pull the alt. and have it checked and it is OK. But says the voltage reg is N/A. Battery checks fine. Check all fuses and relays in circuit and all checks OK. This mechanic I know tells me that in a few years around 01 the computer is what turns the Alt on and off because there is no reg in the alt. He tells me there is this certain kind of voltage reg that you can install to bypass the PCM. Is this true or is he filling full of crap. If it is true does anyone know where this voltage reg can be acquired. I hope this makes some sense. Any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks Kelly
