Question Starter engages and starts, then won't...

my daughter has 2001 Neon. we had the PCM replaced about 6 months ago due to no start issues...now, my daughter calls me that the car wouldn't start. Got to her and asked her to start car, started right up. Got home, as she's leaving again, it wouldn't start but had the high pitch whine when gear not engaging the flywheel. Do I have to replace the whole unit or is there anything else I could check? Same issues in park and Neutral.

Sounds like the teeth on the starter might be bad/worn, which is causing a no start because it is not engaging the flywheel. Had the same thing happen on the Mrs.'s truck. IMO, it's easier to just replace a starter than trying to rebuilt a specific part. It's up to you (if there is indeed a rebuild kit available). IME, half the time the rebuild kits for such things cost almost as much as, or more, than a replacement part.

You can go get a new one or get one from the salvage yard. Try to get a newer starter if getting one from the yard. But Darth is right on Q.
