Default I know nothing about cars have question about a manual trans on a 03 neon before buy

This very well may be answered somewhere else but i couldn't find it. I'm looking to buy a neon from a private seller and they say that there is grinding when shifting into 2nd gear and that they were told the copper o ring needs replacing or it's out of alignment. Now does that sound right? A friend who works on cars said it's probably a bad transmission, I'm not sure which answer to go with, especially since i've read about another car grinding into 3rd and that it needs a copper o ring.

I have no idea what a copper o ring is or does (would like to), but I know that transmissions are expensive so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Well, manual transmissions are a dime a dozen, used anyway. So no worries there. I noticed that in first and second, it shifts into gear no problem. But if I don't push the stick to the right after it's in gear, I hear a little axle noise. Some MTX problems can be fixed by simply replacing the shifter and transmission bushings. Don't take my word on it, as I'm sure the more experienced members will tell you otherwise. But there's my two cents.

As far as a copper o ring is....I have absolutely no idea. I've never seen any reference to it in my Haynes manual when transmissions are involved. If it's grinding going /into/ gear, then a clutch or even a clutch cable might be suspect, as the gear is not completely stopping before being engaged.

These are both simple remedies to the problems. I personally would not buy a neon under these conditions. If you're considering a Neon, do a little research on them like what to expect when buying, what to look for, general problems (head gaskets) and the like. Which I believe you will find all over this forum.
