Default Engine Knock

I have an engine knock that will just not go away. No matter how many times I've changed what can be changed, I can't get rid of it.

I was talking to a mechanic friend and he told me the tappets need to be tightened a 1/4 turn, but the way I understand, the 2.0 engine doesn't have traditional tappets like most motors do. What can anybody recommend? Is there any way to get rid of it?

Exhaust manifold leak maybe?
I found a couple of days ago that the gasket had turned into dust in my 2002 Neon; plus the nuts where the manifold connects to the head at cylinder #4 were finger tight due to the missing gasket and vibration over time. I also had a knocking sound. I still have it, just not as loud now. I haven't replaced the exhaust manifold gasket though.

Is it a knock, or more of a ticking?

It's more of a knock than a tick. It's not an extremely loud one, but it doesn't sound good. The head gasket was just recently, meaning within the last year twice and I'm not having cooling issues.

When the engine is cold, warm or all of the time?

All the time, but it's more pronounced in colder temperatures.

Almost sounds like a case of piston slap? Is the compression good?

Wouldn't know. The compression /should/ be good. I haven't noticed any signs of bad compression. I can have a compression test done the next time I'm in the shop.

Piston slap is very pronounced when the engine is cold (and sounds like a knock) and can be present when the engine is warm if the engine is "loose" enough. I've also seen that a warm engine can knock if the valves are out of adjustment, if adjustable, or carbon buildup on 'em if they aren't. I'm not too sure what else to suggest to check out on the engine...

Well, if it weren't for the fact that I just Seafoamed it about a month ago I would totally do it again. I wouldn't be able to say if the valves are maladjusted, but it's always knocked, before and after the shop took it down to the block for the timing belt.

From what I've researched online, detrimental effects of piston slap is debatable. Although if piston rings are worn, or whatever keeps pistons in line, then obviously, that can't be good. I'm not complaining, really. It's got 210,019 on the engine so I don't plan for it to get much farther than 250k.
