Default OK, what gives???

OK, most of you know at least the brief history of my Neon.
replaced the head gasket, then the radiator, and then I thought the thermostat failed ruining the work I had done.

I removed the thermostat to get by a few weeks until I found a vehicle I liked. I really don't care if it reaches nominal operating temperature, as long as it doesn't overheat again.

With the thermostat removed, I find it still heats up. In fact, the heater puts out more heat than ever before. If I have the temperature **** set to full heat, I swear the vents would melt. It's as if the new radiator is blocked and preventing the water from flowing through. The top tank on the radiator gets warm, but not like the heater is putting out.

The pump must be working since the heater gets a constant supply of hot water (until it boils over), none of the radiator hoses are bent or pinched.

I should also add that during the brief time I ran it after the head gasket and prior to the radiator replacement (about 100 miles), it ran great with no issues until the transmission cooling coil failed.

I'm confused.

The top of the radiator gets hot but the bottom doesn't or does the bottom as well?

I can rest my hand on the top tank while the overflow tank burps, the heater vents risk melting, and the temperature gauge indicates a normal condition.
It's been a bit wet here lately, but I'll reach under the car tomorrow morning and see what the bottom tank reveals.

Main lesson I learned - DO NOT TRUST THE FACTORY TEMPERATURE GAUGE.

At times , my 12ga. would work too.

Yesterday I made it to work fine and the heat wasn't as elevated as the new normal, but the radiator was about equal.

After work I drove to the school to pick up my daughter from track and back home, no boil over and reasonable heat from the vents (I now have the heat blow at low fan RPM through the vents to monitor the heat). The gauge never rises above the lower mark for "normal" temperature.

This AM, I drove my wife to a doctor's visit, back home, and then to work.
Nothing weird or abnormal. I'm beginning to think the car is possessed.
