[HOW TO] 04 Dodge Neon 2.0L VIN C - Cylinder Head (Removal)
REMOVAL - CYLINDER HEAD
To ensure engine gasket sealing, proper surface preparation must be performed, especially with the use of aluminum engine components and multi-layer steel cylinder head gaskets. Refer to Engine/Service and Repair/Procedures/Standard Procedures/Engine Gasket Surface Preparation. See: Service and Repair\Procedures\Engine Gasket Surface Preparation
NOTE : Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets require a scratch free sealing surface.
Remove all gasket material from cylinder head and block. Be careful not to gouge or scratch the aluminum head sealing surface.
Clean all engine oil passages.
INSPECTION
- Perform fuel system pressure release procedure before attempting any repairs.
- Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Remove power steering/air conditioning drive belt.
- Raise vehicle on hoist.
- Drain cooling system.
- Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
- Remove right front wheel.
- Remove accessory drive belt splash shield.
- Remove generator belt.
- Remove crankshaft vibration damper.
- Remove lower torque strut.
- Lower vehicle and remove upper torque strut.
- Remove ground strap and power steering hose support clip from engine mount bracket.
- Remove power steering pump assembly and set aside.
- Support engine from beneath with a suitable jack.
- Remove right side engine mount to bracket through bolt.
- Remove the lower engine mount bracket bolt. Raise engine slightly and remove the upper engine mount bracket bolts.
- Remove the engine mount bracket. This procedure may require additional raising/lowering of engine until bracket will clear engine components.
- Remove front timing belt cover.
- Rotate engine until timing marks are aligned.
- Remove timing belt.
- Remove timing belt tensioner/bracket assembly.
- Remove camshaft sprocket.
- Remove rear timing belt cover.
- Disconnect fuel line at fuel rail.
- Remove coolant recovery container.
- Remove ground strap to cylinder head.
- Remove upper radiator hose.
- Remove intake manifold.
- Disconnect ignition coil electrical connector.
- Remove ignition coil and spark plug cables from engine.
- Remove make-up air hose from cylinder head cover.
- Disconnect cam sensor and Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors.
- Remove heater tube to cylinder head attaching fasteners.
- Remove heater hose from thermostat housing connector.
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- Remove cylinder head bolts.
- Remove cylinder head and gasket (Fig. 14).

INSPECTION
- Cylinder head must be flat within 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) (Fig. 15).
- Inspect camshaft bearing journals for scoring.
- Remove carbon and varnish deposits from inside of valve guides with a reliable guide cleaner.
- Using a small hole gauge and a micrometer, measure valve guides in 3 places top, middle and bottom (Fig. 16). Replace guides if they are not within specification.
- Check valve guide height (Fig. 17).
