Default 2003 Neon Ignition Issue

Without any warning, my wife's Neon would not start last night.

Went to indy mechanic this morning who thought it was the ignition cylinder.

(At this point, I should point out that I am hearing this all second hand)

When he got into the ignition, he determined it was actually something else. He said there was a rod connecting the ignition to the steering wheel which had snapped into and didn't allow it to switch on.

Based on my knowledge of ignitions, that doesn't make any sense to me. He told my wife only a dealership would be able to fix it and suggested we get it towed to a dealer for fixing.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

The ignition switch actuator rod? Yeah, that's a dealer-only type of part. Anyone can replace it, but you can only get the part from either Dodge or another Neon.

Yeah I don't see why he can't fix it, you just have to special order the part..

That looks right, hard to say without being able to look at yours though.

Gotta say, Thanks! $10 on some Torx security bits and $40 on the part... I was able to do the job myself in the parking lot of the indy while they were closed on a Sunday.

Couldn't have turned out better. I am not mechanically inclined. Anyone could do this job.
