2004 Dodge Neon making grinding/rubbing noise!!!!!!!
i have a 2004 Dodge Neon with 170,000+ miles on it. for about 3 weeks now my car makes a grinding/rubbing noise when i accelerate, take off from red light or stop light, pressing on the gas while already on highway and the MOST while going up ANY incline. its been going on for about 3 weeks, the first week or so it wasn't so bad. i had to replace my rack and pinion about 2 weeks AFTER it started making the noise. on the exact same day i took it to the garage to have it worked on, that morning leaving my house to the garage ( around 3 miles away) the noise was very bad and way louder than the day before. i assumed that it was the rack and pinion because it was bad anyways so after the rack and pinion was replaced , the noise was still there.... assumed the noise was lower motor mount after that cuz i had to replace upper motor mount and was making noise very close to it. replaced lower motor mount, noise STILL there. got to lookin under hood and car, noticed one of my pulleys was rubbing against my subframe . seperated pulley and subframe as much as possible w/o harming anything else. noise seemed to die down a little bit for the rest of that day and ever since noise gets louder and louder and more often. PLEASE HELP!!!!
The pulley isn't rubbing anymore? Sounds like it was in some sort of accident? Between that and the torque struts being bad, I'd check the [rear] engine mount. It's probably no good. If it needs to be replaced, spend the extra money and get an OEM one.
This could be anything that has wore out/rubbing other parts. From the brake, bad tires, wheel bearings, axle cv joints, motor mounts, pulleys, ... to internal engine/trans parts.
You will have to find this one by yourself.
You might want to jack the front up so the wheels are off the ground. Have someone in the driver seat while you are outside watching/listening.
Be careful when you are working with moving parts.
